Living in Fisher River
Fisher Bay Provincial Park
Leaders of Fisher River Cree Nation (FRCN), the Manitoba Government and the
Canadian Parks & Wilderness Society (CPAWS) met at the Legislative
Buildings today (July 4) to announce the
Fisher Bay Provincial Park.
The area was nominated for provincial paark status by FRCN in 1999 to protect a representation of the Fisher Bay region's lands and waters for nature, culture and sustainable tourism opportunities. In 2005, FRCN formed a partnership with CPAWS to help make the vision a reality.
"After many years of hard work, it's a joy to be here today to announce park protection for this beautiful and culturally important area," said FRCN Chief David Crate. "This designation ensures that traditinal activities can be maintained onthe landscape and people fromManitoba and across the world can visit and enjoy the natural surroundings."
Healthy Community Inititative
Our Healthy Community Initiative is the only program of its kind in all of Canada. All of our community entities meet regularly to focus on five main areas: Health & Nutrition, Environment, Fitness & Recreation, Justice and Culture & Traditions.
Many community consultations were held to determine the main areas that need improvement to make Fisher River into the safe, happy and healthy community that we want to raise our children in. Elders, youth and community entities all work together to make appropriate changes. For more information, click here.
Illegal Drug By-Law
In 2004, Fisher River implemented mandatory
drug testing for all Band Employees. Pre-testing is required prior
to hiring and afterwards all employees are eligible for monthly random
testing.
You can download the Evaluation Report for more information.
Ochekwiwanasowewin Justice Committee
