Fisher River Board of Education
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I go about applying for sponsorship?
A. All applicants must submit a completed application form before the
deadline dates to be considered for sponsorship. Application forms can be
downloaded on this website.
Q. When is the deadline to apply?
A. May 15 is the deadline date for fall/winter (Sept. To April)sponsorship.
February 28 is the deadline date for spring/summer (May-August)sponsorship.
Q. Do you sponsor for High school.
A. No, we fund post secondary programs only. In the event that Employment &
Training subsidizes us, we may fund a mature grade 12 at an Adult Learning
Centre.
Q. What are my chances of getting sponsorship?
A. When an application is received, they are placed in the Priority list,
and we fund those that we can according to Budget. All others are placed on
a waiting list, and if funding becomes available due to a student not
attending or being terminated, we try to fit in another student from the
waiting list.
Q. If I am on a waiting list, what then?
A. If your application was rejected due to budget restraints and you are on
a wait list, you must re-apply again the next year. Your application would
then be moved to the Deferred priority list.
Q. I don’t live on the reserve, am I eligible for sponsorship?
A. There is no distinction between on or off reserve applicants. We use the
priority lists to determine who is eligible for sponsorship
Q. What is required for continued sponsorship?
A. All sponsored students must re-apply each year, must maintain a GPA of
2.0 or better, must carry the required course load and must adhere to the
post secondary guidelines which are available on this web site.
Q. If my sponsorship is terminated, how long do I have to wait
before I can re-apply for funding?
A. Any student who does not meet all requirements for sponsorship and are
terminated must sit out for a minimum of one full year before re-applying
for sponsorship. In some circumstances a student may be required to sit out
for 2 years depending on the situation.
Q. If I am not approved for sponsorship and I attend on my own, will
I be reimbursed once I am approved for sponsorship?
A. No, we do not reimburse students who have attended on their own.
Q. What happens if I quit my program and continue to receive student
allowances?
A. If you quit your program and neglect to inform Fisher River student
services, and you continue to receive your allowances, you are committing
fraud, and will be required to pay back any monies received while you are
not attending. All monies owed to Fisher River Education must be repaid
before you will be considered for any further sponsorship.
Q. Can I work while receiving sponsorship to attend school?
A. Students may work if they wish, however your priority must be your
education, and as long as your employment does not negatively impact your
studies, you may work if you choose.
Q. What does student allowance cover?
A. A student must cover all living expenses through student allowances. This
includes, rent, amenities, childcare, etc.
Q. What does part time sponsorship cover?
A. Part time sponsorship covers tuition and books only, there is no student
allowance.
Q. Who can I claim as a dependent?
A. If you are a married student and your spouse is employed, you are
eligible for a single allowance. If your spouse is unemployed, you may claim
him as a dependent as well as your natural children who are under the age of
18 and who live full time with you. Children who are under the applicant’s
foster care and receiving maintenance for Child & Family services cannot be
claimed as dependents. Proof of legal guardianship (court documents or child
tax benefit slip) required if a child other than one’s own is claimed as a
dependent.
Q. How does Fisher River Education keep in contact with students and
how do they know if I am attending or not?
A. The Post Secondary Counsellor visits students on a regular monthly basis.
As well, contact is made to the institution and/or department head to
monitor attendance, to act as liaison for students if necessary, and to
monitor academic progress. The post secondary counsellor and the student
services clerk are available by e-mail or telephone to assist students at
any time.
*ALL APPLICANTS MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH POST SECONDARY POLICIES AND ADHERE TO
