The Chief and Council are elected representatives of band members. They are responsible for local administration of community services for residents on band controlled land, including housing, roads, sanitation and welfare. The council is also responsible for the interests of band membership with regard to matters affecting Aboriginal Rights, Treaty Rights, band capital and revenue funds in trust. They may also deal with matters involving non-band members with respect to business and industrial interests, such as the regulation of land leases, royalties, lumber and tourism.

Band government consists of a Chief and four Councillors. The band officials officially serve a two year term. The current Chief and Council are:

David Crate

Chief

David Crate was first elected to council in 1985. He became Chief in 1989 and has continued, except for 2 terms. Throughout his 25 year career, he has focused on long-term planning and development. Chief Crate’s portfolio includes: Finance & Policy Development, Capital Projects, Land Claims, FRCN Business Development, Housing/O & M, Drug Strategy, Human Resources, Social Development, Justice & Policing, Emergency Preparedness, Health Services, Education, Daycare/Headstart/ECD, and Child & Family Services.

Carl Cochrane

Councillor

Carl Cochrane was first elected to council in 2000, serving for four years and then re-elected in 2007. His portfolios include: Finance & Policy Development, Capital Projects, Land Claims, FRCN Business Development, Housing/O & M, Drug Strategy, Human Resources, Education, Sports & Recreation/Gaming, Natural Resources/Environment, Emergency Preparedness, Daycare/Headstart/ECD, Justice & Policing, Social Development, Youth/Jr. Chief & Council, Public Works, and O.S.E.D.C.

Shirley Cochrane

Councillor

Shirley Anne Cochrane was successfully elected to council on August 21, 2015. She retired from Child and Family Services in 2013. During her retirement she was active with various committees as well as being on the board of directors for the Personal care home and Intertribal child and Family services. Her portfolios are the following: Finance, Policy Development, Capital projects, Land Claims Drug Strategy, Employment and Training, Emergency Preparedness, Intergovernmental Relation, Child & Family, Education, Health Services, Healing Centre, Personal Care Home, and Land Management.

Darrell Thaddeus

Councillor

Darrell Thaddeus was successfully elected to council on August 19, 2009 and is currently serving his first term which extends to August 2011. His portfolios include: Finance, Policy Development, Capital Projects, Land Claims, FRCN Business Development, Housing/O & M, Drug Strategy, Human Resources, O.S.E.D.C., Public Works, Personal Care Home, Justice & Policing, Sports & Recreation, Gaming, Daycare/Headstart/ECD, Emergency Preparedness, Education, and Personal Care Home.

Vince Crate

Councillor

Vince Crate, first elected to Council in August of 2003, served four terms until 2011. Vince did not seek re-election in August 2011, due to family reasons. He was successfully re-elected to Council in the August 2015 election. Vince is a commercial fisher and is also a board member on the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation. Vince’s portfolios include Social Development, Justice & Policing, Health, Child & Family Services, Public Works, Environment and Natural Resources which (Fishing, farming and forestry).
